Chakra Belly Dancing

Belly Dance is comprised of a series of isolated movements.  The isolations are movement meditations in that we still the rest of the body and mind and dive into the specific space we are dancing in the body.  Isolations are like words in the language of dance, and once a dancer is proficient in her dance vocabulary, she can create whatever sentences and stories she wants with combinations and layers of movement. 

Chakra Belly Dance facilitates a dancer's own innate ability to enhance the flow of life energy (i.e. Spirit, Eck, Qi, Prana, etc.) by opening and dancing with her chakras.  Chakra is an ancient Sanskrit word literally meaning "wheel" and indicates major centers of energy in the body.  Each energy center is like a computer or power center of information, feeling, and physicality.  Each chakra has corresponding mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health issues, as well as its own associated colors, sounds, archetypes, myths, and other dynamics.  The belly dance isolations provide the dancer with the opportunity to know herself better, body and soul.  You do not need to have a background in dance or energy medicine, be a natural performer, or look or act a certain way in order to share in the dance.  The point of Chakra Belly Dance is to explore and implement healing within you and on behalf of all women and the world.

In addition to the classical isolations of belly dance, we integrate gentle yoga, mudras (or sacred hand movements), and bhandas (or body locks) into our practice.  This playful mix encourages flexibility, creativity, and profound core strength.  This practice is especially helpful for any woman who wants to heal her reproductive system, balance her hormones, stregnthen the deep muscularture of the abdomen and pelvis, and generally enhance her feminine self.  I found this practice specifically beneficial as I embraced pregnancy and prepared for natural childbirth.  Whatever your reasons, our class provides the perfect space for the novice dancer as well as a solid on-going practice for the more experienced dancer.  This class is *not* performance oriented nor choreography driven.  Women of all shapes, ages, colors, and sizes are welcomed to join us as we create a safe, sacred space to dance in.  Come experience this most transformative and empowering practice!
